Merfolks

Blue is the only color that doesn't quite have a perennial creature type. Green has elves, white has soldiers, black has zombies, and red has goblins. Blue is the only color left without a figurehead race. Merfolk at one time was the designated blue tribe, but in recent years has been phasing in and out as representatives of the color blue. That time in history was a dark time for mono-blue creature-based decks.

Spoiler:
When WotC temporarily phased them out, the fans protested vehemently. WotC brought them as the main blue race in the tribal block Lorwyn, so it stands to reason that Merfolk is still highly regarded in terms of design and flavor.

There have been a few competitive Merfolk decks throughout Magic's history. The most successful is probably Fish, which played Merfolks and tempo cards like Standstill. When the Merfolks were phased out, better blue creatures replaced the Merfolks in Fish decks. However, the name of this archetype remains as Fish, even if no Merfolk or fish creatures are put in those decks.

This is why I envy some other popular tribes like Elves and Goblins. Just about every set ever printed has some elves and goblins in them. However, Merfolks missed out on entire blocks. So while Elf and Goblin decks got boosted to insane levels, Merfolks decks stagnated.

Fortunately, WotC seems to have regained their senses and have created new Merfolk cards in substantial quantity in Lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocks, and in M2010 (or M10). Here's hoping that Merfolks will remain the go-to tribe for blue hereafter.

Therefore, in this topic, we will try to bring back the glory of the Merfolks with cards that let them compete with Elves and Goblins, particularly in the Eternal and Extended formats.
